About the Artist – Jennifer is an artist, majoring in printmaking, she is a graduate as

she got her Bachelors degree in biology and is getting her masters degree in printmaking

this semester.

Background – before returning to school, she worked for health corporations that help

people, she is experienced in printmaking for about 20 years. As a career she says that she

will be teaching a printmaking class next semester and hopes to continue to do so in the

future.  Some of her interest are nature and  finding interesting images.

Formal analysis

Her work is based on photos of landscapes, maps, which she finds from google maps

which are abstract but still somewhat detailed. Some other prints were based on

what looked like graffiti, they had text, were smaller than the other prints  and didn’t have

much color.

Many of the works have many lines, shapes, as well as dark, cool colors , much of her

work varies in size, there is some  texture as some of them pop out and appear 3d.

She adds some gloss medium to some of her prints to make them shinier.

She says that she makes some of her prints bigger than others based on the importance of

the image, as she wants people to see all the details and see things that they may not see

at first glance and if it were smaller. She also says that she has even included a print of

the school camps, which many might have not noticed.

content analysis

She says that some of her work is based on her education in biology, as well as changes

in nature. Ideas of her work include photos of landscapes, places that have been through

floods, fires and other things.

synthesis/my experience

i saw Jennifer’s work at the printmaking lab before the gallery, it is good to see her work

as in my opinion it is really good and inspiring. it takes a lot of  long and hard work to

make work that is really big. I liked two of her prints that were mix of purples, pinks and

violets, which looked very nice. In conclusion, it was a good conversation.

Here are some photos.

Week 7 – Artist Conversation – Alicia Keyworth

Exhibition Information  – Artist: Alicia Keyworth

Exhibition: F*art –  Fiber Arts Group Show

Media: Fibers, trash bags, Cotton Thread, and Metallic Yarn

Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Max L. Gatov Gallery East

Website: none

Instagram: aliciakeyworth

Artist Background – Alicia is an undergrad artist, both a Fibers and Art education major

and is graduating next semester with a BFA in Fiber and BA in Art education. She is

currently working on her teaching credentials as she hopes to become an art teacher in the

future. She is thinking about perhaps teaching kindergarden students.

She is from Los Alamitos. When she was a freshmen in college, she was in graphic design,

but she saw that she liked fibers and teaching more, so she switched majors.

Her interests include weaving and cats as she has two. She is currently working on making

a sheep fleece. She likes to go to San Juan Capistrano to see the animals called alpacas.

She said that some of her work explores materials that are thrown away, but are

repurposed and used for other purposes.

Formal Analysis – She only had one work in the gallery. which was called

“Wasteful Growth.” It is not that big and it was black and gold. rectangle shape.

As mentioned, the materials are fibers, trash bags and metallic yarn.

She weaved the metallic yarn and added metallic yarn through the trash bag.

She weaved the plastic of the trash bag that is held together by thread. The work is

detailed unclose  but looks more simple from a distance.

The texture of the trash bag is plastic and was soft. The metallic yarn was smooth, but not

rough. it is durable material. the work has some rhythm, it is straight. It is also simple and

has different lines.

Content Analysis

She said that for this work she wanted to be able to be free and try different materials that

aren’t normally used together. She said she does works based on process. She is interested

in  environmental issues like the got the garbage patch in the ocean, which inspired this

work.   she used scraps. This work is not very colorful but she said that her other works are

more colorful. She did not want to include a lot of color in this work as she wanted to do

something different.

Synthesis / My Experience

I though that this work was simple but had an overall message of repurposing materials

that were scraps or trash. She tried to do something different. I have not seen the garbage

patches that she was inspired by. So this work does not resonate to me to me, but this

work has different meanings for different people.  i think that it is detailed and well done.

It was cool learning about different processes of making things, especially with recycled

materials. In conclusion, it was a good conversation.

Here are some pictures of the artist, her work and other artworks also at the gallery

About the Artist

This Thursday I had a good conversation with my friend Csulb Metals artist Kristi Jensen.

She is a  metals major, undergrad senior and she graduates in the fall.

She is a returning student as she had not graduated prior to this.

She has been in metals for 2 years as she was ceramics before, but said it wasn’t for her.

She is president of metal arts guild  and she was in charge of this exhibition, which I and

others I know are also part of. I met Kristi in enameling/metals jewelry last semester.

She often makes and sells her own jewelry. She made two similar pendants and sold one of

them. she hope to continue to do this after graduating. She often works at home in Venice,

where she has all her tools and materials.

She is from Nevada, and she was a flight attendant for eight years before returning to

school. Her interests include TheWalking Dead, Knitting.

Formal Analysis

She has four works in the gallery which all are very beautiful and well done.

The work includes a necklace pendant, ring and two sculptures.

Her works are untitled as she says that she sometimes has trouble coming up with names.

The works vary in size and color. As the necklace and ring are very small and the other two

works are much bigger. The ring is shinny silver, the pendant is green, blue handsome

purple.  Her works are straight not jagged. the texture is smooth. three of the works have

some negative space.

Her work has different lines and shapes as the ring and pendant are round and oval.

The other two works are round with other shapes as well.

the artwork that had rhythm was her sculpture which resembles a round bottle or base,

had many different lines going in different directions and created shadows.

Content Analysis – The works have to do with color, technique, process, and form.

She said that these works were made as a result of her love to  make and create things, she

also loves to learn and experiment with different techniques and try to combine them in

her artwork. She gets inspired by different techniques and other things in nature. She said

that it takes approximately 3 weeks to make each work.

Synthesis / My Experience

I really like the artwork in the gallery. They are a lll well done and interesting.

They all have different meanings but they come together to become one. Works are paired

together in their similarity. This work inspires me and it was great to see work from

people that I  know and I saw work on their art.

Here are some pics of her and her work. The instagram post i posted of her and my plate.
